  1. To use the MaxFax voice and fax software with LineShare, follow these steps:

  3. 1. Make sure that your have MaxFax version 3.5.2 or better, LineShare
  4. version 3.1 or better.
  5.  
  6. 2. Open the MaxFax application.
  7. a) Select the Modem Settings item from the Configure menu. The Modem
  8. Settings dialog box appears. 
  9. b) Select "Disabled" in the "Fax Mode" menu. 
  10. c) Press OK and select Quit from the File Menu.
  11.  
  12. 3. Install LineShare.
  13.  
  14. 4. Restart the computer.
  15.  
  16. 5. Open the LineShare control panel.
  17. a) Select the port your to which your modem is connected.  
  18. b) Click the Attach button.  
  19. c) Select MaxFax&ARA&Data. 
  20. d) Click the Attach button. The Options dialog box appears.
  21. e) Select the modem type from the Modem menu. 
  22. f) Click OK.

  24. 6. Check that the 'Line Status' field in the LineShare control panel
  25. indicates "Waiting for a call".
  26.  
  27. 7. Open the MaxFax application. 
  28. a) Select MaxFax System Prefs from the Configure menu. 
  29. b) Switch the Arbitrate serial ports option OFF.
  30. c) Click Save. 
  31. d) Select the Modem Settings item from the Configure menu.  The Modem
  32. Settings dialog box appears. 
  33. e) Select the MaxFax@Modem Port from the Port menu. 
  34. f) Select "Voice/SR Fax" in the "FaxMode" menu. 
  35. g) Press OK.
  36. h) Select Quit from the File Menu.

  38. 8. Check that Lineshare and MaxFax are configured properly: call your modem
  39. and leave a voice message, send a fax to your computer, send a fax from your
  40. computer. Check the LineShare status: when there is no call in progress, the
  41. 'Line Status' field (of the LineShare control panel) should indicate
  42. "waiting for a call".

  44. Configuring ARA:
  45. 1. Open the Remote Access Setup control panel.
  46. a) Select ARA/LineShare from the Modem menu (this file comes with LineShare
  47. and should be placed into the Extensions folder).
  48. b) Select the 'ARA@Modem' port from the Port menu. 
  49. c) Select the "Answer calls" option. 
  50. d) Close the Remote Access Setup control panel.

  52. 2. Open the MaxFax application. 
  53. a) Select Voice Mailbox Editor from the Windows menu. 
  54. b) Create an ARA mailbox by clicking the new button in the Mailbox editor
  55. window. 
  56. c) Change the mailbox type from 'Record' to 'Data'.
  57. e) Uncheck the 'Play Greeting checkbox if you wish MaxFax to not play a
  58. greeting before switching to ARA.
  59. f) Select 'ARA' from the 'Switch callers to:' popup if you are using  ARA
  60. 2.0.  If you are using ARA 1.0 or any other communications program, select
  61. 'Other...'. If you are using ARA 1.0 enter ARA1 in the Edit Text box below
  62. the 'Switch callers to:' popup menu.
  63. g) Enter the Mailbox ID you want callers to use to access ARA
  64.  
  65.         All callers who wish to connect to AppleTalk Remote Access on your
  66. machine need to know the Mailbox ID of the 'Data' mailbox you just created. 
  67. They will need to follow a special dialing procedure to get MaxFax to stop
  68. playing a greeting message and switch to negotiating a connection with ARA. 
  69. To connect to your computer via ARA, they will append several commas to the
  70. phone number and then enter the ARA mailbox ID you set above.  For example,
  71. if your phone number is 555-2424 and the ARA Mailbox ID is 1, a caller
  72. should enter 555 2424,,,,,,,,,1# into the "phone number" field in the ARA
  73. client document.  Each comma results in a two second delay before dialing
  74. the mailbox ID.  The mailbox ID must be dialed after MaxFax has answered the
  75. call and is playing a greeting message but before the greeting has finish
  76. playing.  MaxFax will hear the mailbox ID and switch to ARA.  You may need
  77. to experiment to get the correct number of commas in the dial string so that
  78. the Mailbox ID is dialed during the greeting message.

  80. Configuring other communication applications:

  82. If you only use a communication application to place outgoing calls, you
  83. need not reconfigure it - it can use the Modem port as it did before MaxFax
  84. and LineShare were installed. If you want to receive calls using
  85. communication software (BBS, e-mail, etc.), you should reconfigure it to use
  86. the Data or Data1 LineShare subport. Next enter the MaxFax Voice mailbox
  87. editor and create a data mailbox, Choose 'Other...' from the 'Switch Caller
  88. to:' popup menu.  In the Edit Text field below the popup, enter the name of
  89. the port you configured your communications application to use (Data or
  90. Data1).  When a caller enters the mailbox ID of the data mailbox, MaxFax
  91. will tell LineShare to pass the call to the program connected to the named
  92. LineShare subport.  Callers connect to these other communications programs
  93. in the same way as they do with ARA.  They simply add commas and a mailbox
  94. ID to the dialing string.
